This weekend we received the very disappointing news that Robin van Persie looks like being out for the rest of the season. RVP had started the season well and looked like playing a key role in any success Arsenal had this season, but the injury he picked up on International duty now leaves Arsenal without their main attacker and one of their most influential players. This looks to have forced Arsenal into making a big money move in January for a top striker to keep their season on track with 19 year old Mario Balotelli the latest player linked with a move to the emirates.

Balotelli is highly rated in Italy and is one of the countries brightest prospects, his manager Jose Mourinho however is said not to be the biggest fan of the Italy Under-21 and publicly criticised the player after Inter Milan’s game with Rubin Kazan.

Wenger has previously highlighted the player as one that he feels could be one of the greatest players and who am I to argue with Arsene Wenger, possibly the greatest manager for spotting potential in young players. Balotelli is also said to be equally interested in moving to Arsenal to work under Wenger who he feels can develop his talent and make him a better player.

The type of figures that are being quoted for Balotelli is in the region of £30 million which would be a record for Wenger to spend on one player. Although this is a lot on money and not the usual way that Wenger does things Arsenal are n need of a couple of top class players in an Arsenal jersey to just take them that extra step and make them true title contenders. There is no doubt that Arsenal have one of the most talented squads in the Premiership but there is something missing that propels to the top of the table and if the rumours are true Wenger believes Balotelli is the man to do that. Whether Balotelli signs for Arsenal we will have to wait and see, but he is sure to be only one of many names that are linked with a move to the club over the coming months.

Liverpool have not had the best start to the season, they are struggling for form and many of their top players are either injured or not fully fit. However they go into a crunch tie tonight that they must win if they have any hope of staying in the Champions League this season.

Jamie Carragher has already come out and sated that it is not the end of the world if the club get knocked out of the Champions League this year as they have the Europa League to fall back on, but the reality is it could be disastrous for Liverpool. If Liverpool get knocked out of the Champions League they will lose a fortune in potential revenue and with rumours already surrounding the financing of the club it could man that their top players will be available for sale. Also Liverpool are slipping down the league table at the moment and with Aston Villa, Manchester City and Spurs all with a good shout of grabbing a top 4 finish, if this happens and Liverpool miss out on even the group stages of the Champions League next year then there is a high possibility that this would be the last season you would see Torres in a Liverpool jersey.

As you would expect, Steven Gerrard is still confident that his side can turn there recent poor form around and make this season a successful one.

“The mood in the camp is really good, although we know our position in the table isn’t good enough,” Gerrard said.

“But we have faith in our ability. We know we can put things right.”

He added: “It’s been a frustrating few weeks because as soon as I was fit we had the international break. I’ve been desperate to play and can’t wait to really get going properly again.”

There is still plenty of time in the season for Liverpool to turn things around. They need to win tonight’s Champions League clash to give themselves the chance to qualify from the group and if they can get through that then they have a bit of time to get their European campaign back on track. With regards the league there is almost no chance of Liverpool winning the league this year but the opportunity for a top 4 finish is far form gone, however they will need to improve considerably and hope that the challengers each have their own run of poor for this season.

Scotland suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Wales at the weekend to signal the end of George Burley’s Scotland career after only 22 months in charge. This was not the first time that Burley’s position as Scotland manager had come under scrutiny, however where he had been given more time previously, time had well and truly run out for him this time around.

The headline of no one being interested in the Scotland job may sound a little dramatic and inaccurate with some managers already putting their hat in the ring, it would probably have been more accurate to say why is no one with the credentials interested in the Scotland job?

The early favourites to land the job were Walter Smith and Craig Levein, however Smith has already said he is not interested in the post and although Levein has not yet said whether he is interested or not, it is believed that he will want to continue to manage at club level for the foreseeable future. That leaves Graeme Souness, who is said to be reluctant because he was turned down in favour of George Burley previously, and ex-players like John Collins and Gary McAllister who have had limited management experience.

The obvious next step would be to look to bring in a foreign manager to shake things up a little, however after Scotland’s bad experience with Berti Vogts the Scottish FA are said to be very reluctant to bring in a foreign coach and instead want to explore all avenues for a home grown manager.

To answer the question of why no one wants the job, I suppose the lack of talent that Scotland have in their squad at the moment as well as the number of players who have recently said they will never play for Scotland again are two huge reasons. Anyone taking the helm has to deal with all the problems and rifts that occurred during Burley’s time in charge as well as completely revamp the whole set up and go back to basics. A completely fresh approach is needed as is time, but in modern day football time is something not often given.

There have been a number of managers linked with the job, however none have been big names that will command respect in the dressing room. This was Burley’s problem, he didn’t command respect and was continually undermined until it got to the point that there was literally nothing he could do right. A strong coach, who the players will respect, is needed however with the most likely candidates already looking to have ruled themselves out it won’t be easy to find the next Scotland manager.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that Man Utd are not the team they were last year with the only loss to the team being Cristiano Ronaldo. Wayne Rooney has been given much more of free role and is playing better than he ever has but he can’t do it alone. Just like Ronaldo needed Rooney in the team Rooney, needs a Ronaldo and Antonio Valencia just isn’t it.

Valencia is not a bad player and has shown glimpses of why he was brought to the club. However he is not the world class player that Ronaldo was and the world class player that is needed in the team. At times the side seems to lack creativity and imagination, particularly in the midfield, but trying to find a replacement for Ronaldo is much easier said than done, not only financially, but also in finding someone who offers the same quality.

One of the names continually linked with a move to the club is Franck Ribery. He appears to be one of the most sought after players at the moment but Bayern were keen to keep him in the summer and did but if the rumours are true they could now be willing to cash in on their star man.

Another two players linked with the club are David Villa and David Silva, both of whom appear to be top quality players. Silva is not quite the quality of Ronaldo but is certainly a top class player whilst Villa is one of the best forwards in the game. Both players seemed reluctant to leave Valencia but with the increasing financial problems at the club they could be forced to move.

Atletico Madrid’s Argentinean forward Sergio Aguero is a player linked with a move to the Premiership, and although there is no doubt the lad has talent I am just not convinced he can do it as regularly as he would need to at a club like Man Utd.

For me Ribery, Villa and Silva would certainly add to the quality of the team but I feel more is needed. A top quality central creative midfielder is what the club need at the club but these are not easy to pick up. A player with the qualities of Diego, though I am not necessarily saying him though you could do worse, is the type of layer needed. Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs have served the club magnificently over the years but they can’t be depended on forever. Man Utd need to sign someone sooner rather than later but I don’t see any big money move being made until the summer which I fear may be a little too late for them.
